NADIA PLESNER SPEAKS AT THE UN

Danish political artist speaks at the UN

Danish Nadia Plesner is the artist behind the depiction of the little boy from Darfur with Louis Vuitton bag over his arm. The controversial image is now an eye-catcher for the UN's work with artistic freedom.

UN special rapporteur on cultural rights and artistic freedom, Ms..Farida Shaheed, presents an annual report to the Human Rights Council Monday 3 June. It's topic is the right to artistic freedom.

On this occasion, guests include Danish Ole Reitov, program officer from Free Muse, Palais des Nations in Geneva together with the Danish artist Nadia Plesner.

Mission accomplished

The Danish artist Nadia Plesner knows what it means to struggle under pressure for her artistic freedom.

In 2008 she was sued by fashion giant Louis Vuitton to have printed artwork "Simple Living" - the boy with the Louis Vuitton bag on a t-shirt to raise money for the people of Darfur.

Nadia Plesner was threatened with a lawsuit for abuse of the Louis Vuitton brand. The fear of a costly damages was to stop Nadia Plesner from selling Darfur t-shirts.

Simple Living provokes,
because no one can identify with both the bag and boy
Instead Nadia incorporated her image in his great work of art "Darfurnica" which measures approx. 3.5. meters x 8 meters and refer to Picasso's famous work "Guernica" - reproduction of bombing during the Spanish Civil War. While it was exhibited in Copenhagen in January 2011, Louis Vuitton sued Nadia Plesner who was sentenced to a daily fine of DKK 40,000.

"The prosecutor said in court that the artwork was devastating for Louis Vuitton, because their customers now come to think of Darfur, when they see a Vuitton bag. That is how they think. I thought, however, that my mission was completed, "said Nadia Plesner to Amnesty Denmark's members magazine.

The lawsuit was settled in June 2011 - and to Nadia Plesner advantage: She got a court order stating that she has the right to use status symbols in her art.

The "blæstomvundne" artwork is now used by the United Nations as a logo in connection with work for the freedom of artistic expression and creation.

OCHRC's annual session - now with artists

UN Human Rights Council holds session in Geneva from 27 May - 14June 2013, the special rapporteur Ms. Farida Shahed presents its annual report and hosts the event with the Danish artistic freedom fighters.

As well as Ole Reitov and Nadia Plesner participating, Mr. Mohammed Aly Ansar, Essakane Desert Festival Director, Mali, will be awarded Free Muse Prize 2013.

Deeyah, the film/music producer and founder of the Norway-based company Fuuse where human rights are promoted through activism, such as the composition of digital media art, will speak. As will Mr. Didier Awadi, a musician from Senegal, Mr. Jonathan Stanczack from Freedom Theatre in Jenin and Ms. Jane Connors, Chief, Special Procedures Branch, OHCHR and Norwegian Mr. Didrik Tonseth.

The event takes place Monday 3 June at. 14:30 to 17:00 in room XXV, Palais des Nations, Geneva.

The last time I had a walk with Buddha, we were in Christiania. He had no teeth.
The sun shone, and new spring leaves tickled the air, as gentle breezes danced above our heads. A chilly, spring day. Copenhagen has lots of them.
Buddha said, "The only real complaint any human being has, is that they know not the origin of their existence and the meaning of it. Everything else is bullshit."

Thanks

THE REAL DEAL OR AN IMPOSTER

Tuesday, May 28, 2013
Nashville.com by Sue Langford
There are so many fans heading down to Nashville this year for CMA Fest with hopes, dreams and fantasies of meeting their favorite country artists in mind.  Fan fair brings in tons of fans and those once in a lifetime chances for the lucky fans.  Over the past number of years, social media has become a tool to promote and advertise upcoming artists and shows.  Facebook has fan pages for almost every artist you’d want to meet.  The one thing I came across was profiles claiming to be some of my favorite musicians.
Truthfully, I managed to be quite lucky meeting artists.  I’ve become a fan of Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, Brantley Gilbert, Jason Aldean and so on.  I even won the opportunity to meet some of those artists.  The one thing I realized after my first meet and greet with Jason Aldean last year was that the artists don’t always know what’s happening regarding the social media part of promoting themselves.
Via a little tip I received from a friend on Facebook, I started realizing that fake profiles were being created under the names of some of the top ten music acts.  Jason Aldean has 10 profiles under his stage name.  I dug a little deeper into it and realized that some fans took advantage of their popularity.  Perfect example was last summer.  The person behind the fake Jason Aldean profile was claiming to be Jason, talking to fans and saying completely outlandish things that a clear thinking person would’ve been shocked at.  I ended up befriending a small group of ladies that brought the truth to light.  There were two profiles that were working together to defraud all the fans.  One was claiming to be Jason’s wife Jessica, and the other was claiming to be Jason himself.  Rumors were created, lies were told and the web of lies continued to get bigger and bigger.  As of today, there are over 2000 people still on those profiles thinking that they are talking to the real Jason Aldean.
When I won the chance to meet Jason last year and asked him about the profiles, he said there was only one page that was his – one and only one.  He said it was run by his management company for promotion and for the fans.  This small group of ladies was told by that management company to screenshot any conversations that this impersonator had with other fans and report it to them.  Still, nothing was done.  Those profiles continue to this day.  What I’ve realized in all this time is that sometimes the management companies don’t even realize the importance of the social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.
As a smart business move, Twitter has opted to verify celebrity accounts (a step ahead of Facebook).  As I see it, it was a smart move on their part so that fans aren’t defrauded.  My question was, why hasn’t Facebook done that?  A petition is still circulating that was going to be forwarded to Facebook about this complaint.
In the past month or so, I was notified that these fake profiles are starting to get worse.  Now, the imposters are creating fake profiles to corroborate the original profiles.  Perfect example was a scandal that was released regarding Alan Jackson and his daughter.  Someone claimed to be his daughter and said that she was in hospital etc.  It hit the airwaves and fans came in droves to stop it from happening again on Facebook.  Same thing happened with Martina McBride’s daughters.  Oddly enough, they even went as far as creating profiles under the names of Jason Aldean’s daughters to cover for the fake Jason profiles.
The impostors, over the past few months, have even gone as far as accepting gifts in Jason’s name.  Packages were sent to somewhere in the state of Washington as fans were told that he could pick them up there.  Fans sent expensive guitars with promises that “Jason” would sign them and send them back.  Nobody ever got anything back from these imposters.  A private investigator was even duped into believing that it wasn’t a scam.
Oddly enough, a group of ladies I ended up bumping into on some of the fake profiles took it upon themselves to start defending Jason Aldean’s name on these social media sites.  Known only as the “Aldean Defenders”, these ladies have spent almost 3 years trying to rid Facebook of the impersonators and tried to ensure that others don’t get caught up in the web of lies from these fake profiles.  The group started out as 2 or 3 women and has taken off from there.  Not only are they trying to clear Jason Aldean’s name on Facebook, but they’ve gone one step further trying to clear the name of anyone whose name has become attached to this group of impostors responsible for the fake profiles.  “I can’t believe how far this has gone.  Someone needs to stop it,” one of the ladies that we’ll name J.A.  J.A. along with J.S. and S.L. were and will remain the founding members of this group of ladies.  “Someone has to do something.  Why wouldn’t it be us,” J.S. said.  “When we realized how far this had gone, we immediately banded together to try and stop it once and for all,” S.L. said.  “Facebook allows these profiles to be created despite the hundreds of reports that they are sent.  When they stop allowing this and start verifying like Twitter does, we won’t need to do this anymore,” J.A and S.L said in a conversation I had with them recently.  “There are a few profiles that truly are who they say they are.  Only one I’ve had contact with was Jana Kramer,” S.L. mentioned.  So does that mean that every other profile of any country artists is fake?  Not necessarily.  When you have true proof, you know once and for all that it really is them.  Don’t be fooled.
When all is said and done, it’s up to the fans to believe what they want to believe. When you look at all the drama that this group of women have tried to put an end to over the past few years, you can’t help but thank them.  Next time you look at a star’s personal page on Facebook and think that you’re actually talking to them, think twice.  Don’t be surprised if you start realizing that you’re stuck in a web of lies.
Rules for Facebook:
1)      If someone claims to be a country artist and is exposing personal information and starting rumors, report them.  They are most likely, fake.
2)      When you come across a fake profile, report it.  Don’t wait to see if you’re right.
3)      Don’t ever send personal items to an artist when they give you an address on Facebook.  Most packages that are truly going to the artists would go through their management company.  Only way it could be different from that is when they are Opry members.  The Opry has mailboxes for its members where fans can send packages and letters.
4)      If you are duped, don’t feel so bad.  So were thousands of others.
5)      Trust your gut instinct. If you think it’s fake, it probably is.

Gang aft agley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!
Still thou are blest, compared wi' me!

THE MOST RACIST COMMERCIAL IN HISTORY?

Soft drink giant PepsiCo says it is pulling a highly controversial commercial for Mountain Dew -- depicting five African-American men and a goat in a police line-up -- that has managed to offend African-Americans, women and bloggers coast-to-coast.
African-American rapper Tyler, the Creator, developed the 60-second spot in which a battered white woman on crutches is urged by an officer to identify a suspect out of a lineup of black men. A talking goat named Felicia is included in the lineup. The goat makes threatening remarks to the woman, including, "Keep ya mouth shut."

You're about to see the movie that holds the Guinness World Records™ record for the World's Smallest Stop-Motion Film (see how it was made at HERE). The ability to move single atoms — the smallest particles of any element in the universe — is crucial to IBM's research in the field of atomic memory. But even nanophysicists need to have a little fun. In that spirit, IBM researchers used a scanning tunneling microscope to move thousands of carbon monoxide molecules (two atoms stacked on top of each other), all in pursuit of making a movie so small it can be seen only when you magnify it 100 million times. THE BLACK FLAG!

The black color and the black flag as a symbol are closely related to the misery of mankind under rule. It is claimed the color of black symbolizes dried blood and is therefore closely related to the bloodshed of oppressive rule or the rebellion, and the suffering, hunger, misery and death of the ruled masses. The dried blood may also represent the helplessness, and in time: apathy, of people under rule, who are forced to watch their liberties, family and friends be slaughtered by the tyrant(s). It symbolizes that the time of tyranny and oppression is to be ended, and that the rebellion against the oppressive rule will not stop, its rebels will not surrender nor be merciful. “Liberty or Death.” “Surrender or die!”

http://www.anarchism.net/symbol_bf.htm

Why is our flag black? Black is a shade of negation. The black flag is the negation of all flags. It is a negation of nationhood which puts the human race against itself and denies the unity of all humankind. Black is a mood of anger and outrage at all the hideous crimes against humanity perpetrated in the name of allegiance to one state or another. It is anger and outrage at the insult to human intelligence implied in the pretenses, hypocrisies, and cheap chicaneries of governments.

Black is also a color of mourning; the black flag which cancels out the nation also mourns its victims the countless millions murdered in wars, external and internal, to the greater glory and stability of some bloody state. It mourns for those whose labor is robbed (taxed) to pay for the slaughter and oppression of other human beings. It mourns not only the death of the body but the crippling of the spirit under authoritarian and hierarchic systems; it mourns the millions of brain cells blacked out with never a chance to light up the world. It is a color of inconsolable grief.

But black is also beautiful. It is a color of determination, of resolve, of strength, a color by which all others are clarified and defined. Black is the mysterious surrounding of germination, of fertility, the breeding ground of new life which always evolves, renews, refreshes, and reproduces itself in darkness. The seed hidden in the earth, the strange journey of the sperm, the secret growth of the embryo in the womb all these the blackness surrounds and protects.

So black is negation, is anger, is outrage, is mourning, is beauty, is hope, is the fostering and sheltering of new forms of human life and relationship on and with this earth. The black flag means all these things. We are proud to carry it, sorry we have to, and look forward to the day when such a symbol will no longer be necessary.

SWEDE'S TAKE DRUGS FROM BIEBER'S BUS

Swedish police: Small amount of drugs taken from Bieber's bus

By Alan Duke, CNN
updated 2:56 PM EDT, Thu April 25, 2013
(CNN) -- Swedish police found illegal narcotics on Justin Bieber's tour bus as it was parked outside Stockholm's Globe Arena, where he was performing, a police spokesman said Thursday.

While a source close to Bieber insisted it was a non-story and no charges were filed, it is the latest stumble in the teen pop star's European tour. Bieber's publicist had no official comment when contacted by CNN.

Police found a small amount of unspecified illegal narcotics on the tour bus that Bieber and about nine others had taken to the arena for the concert Wednesday night, Stockholm police spokesman Varg Gyllander said.

Authorities searched the bus at the arena after a police officer smelled marijuana near the vehicle when it was outside a Stockholm hotel, Gyllander said. The Bieber team had left the bus before police searched it.

The case is under investigation, but no arrests were made and no charges have been filed, Gyllander said. For a charge of possession of narcotics, police must find the drug on the     offender, he said.

The Stockholm concert proceeded as scheduled. Bieber's next concert is on Sunday in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Earlier this month, Bieber drew criticism for a remark he left in the guest book of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He suggested that Frank, the teenage diarist who died in a Nazi concentration camp in 1945, would have been a fan of his. Critics accused him of being narcissistic, but others, including Frank's stepsister, criticized the uproar and said Frank might indeed have been a fan.

And last month in Munich, German authorities confiscated a young monkey that Bieber traveled with.

CNN"s Stephanie Halasz and Jason Hanna contributed to this report.

ELECTRO MAGNETIC PULSE WEAPONS

Boeing has completed another successful test for technology that fries enemy electronics with little to no collateral damage to other objects.

Boeing describes CHAMP as "a non-kinetic alternative to traditional explosive weapons that use the energy of motion to defeat a target." In its most recent test that took place last week with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory Directed Energy Directorate, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., over the Utah Test and Training Range, Boeing proved CHAMP could follow a pre-programmed flight plan and wipe out enemy target data and electronic subsystems by emitting high amounts of energy.

In a recent feature on CHAMP's latest test, Boeing describes how the missile approached a two-story building, fired high-powered microwaves at it and effectively knocked out the computers and other electrical systems inside. It states that even the cameras that were inside the building to record the test were wiped out.

"Today we turned science fiction into science fact," Coleman said in Boeing's feature.

History professor William R. Forstchen discussed the potential damage rendered by an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) event, and what we can to do prepare for the possibility. There are actually two kinds of potentials for generating an EMP, military or solar, he explained. A nuclear fission weapon, such as Iran or North Korea are currently developing, that is detonated about 250 miles above the Earth's atmosphere would trigger electrostatic discharge, striking the Earth's surface and overloading the power grid and knocking it out, he detailed. The Soviets conducted an EMP test in 1962, and a power plant 500 miles away from the center of the detonation burst into flames, because of the EMP overload that fed into the transmission lines, he cited.

Just a few days ago, we were hit by the largest solar storm in five years, and NASA & NOAA have predicted a significantly increased solar storm cycle over the next 18 months, Forstchen noted. A large enough coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun could generate a global-wide EMP event, particularly in the northern and southern latitudes. The "Carrington Event" of 1859 blew out telegraph lines, and the "energy output was so intense that railroad ties were bursting into flames," he said. Forstchen advocates congressional action to protect America's grid, such as put forth by Cong. Roscoe Bartlett.

Biography:

William R. Forstchen is a Professor of History and Faculty Fellow at Montreat College, in Montreat, North Carolina. He received his doctorate from Purdue University with specializations in Military History, the American Civil War and the History of Technology. His current book, One Second After was cited on the floor of Congress and before the House Armed Services Committee by Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (R.-MD), chair of the House Committee tasked to evaluate EMP weapons, as a realistic portrayal of the potential damage rendered by an EMP attack on the continental United States.

Wikipedia

An electromagnetic pulse (commonly abbreviated EMP) is a burst of electromagnetic radiation. The abrupt pulse of electromagnetic radiation usually results from certain types of high energy explosions, especially a nuclear explosion, or from a suddenly fluctuating magnetic field. The resulting rapidly-changing electric fields and magnetic fields may couple with electrical/electronic systems to produce damaging current and voltage surges.

In military terminology, a nuclear warhead detonated hundreds of kilometers above the Earth's surface is known as a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) device. Effects of a HEMP device depend on a very large number of factors, including the altitude of the detonation, energy yield, gamma ray output, interactions with the Earth's magnetic field, and electromagnetic shielding of targets.

Preparedness refers to the state of being prepared for specific or unpredictable events or situations. Preparedness is an important quality in achieving goals and in avoiding and mitigating negative outcomes. It is a major phase of emergency management, and is particularly valued in areas of competition such as sport and military science.

Methods of preparation include research, estimation, planning, resourcing, education, practicing and rehearsing.

Survivalism is a movement of individuals or groups (called survivalists or preppers) who are actively preparing for emergencies as well as possible disruptions in social or political order, on scales ranging from local to international. Survivalists often have emergency medical and self-defence training, stockpile food and water, prepare for self-sufficiency, and build structures that will help them survive or "disappear" (e.g. a survival retreat or underground shelter).

Anticipated disruptions include the following: Clusters of natural disasters, patterns of apocalyptic planetary crises, or Earth Changes (tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, solar storms, severe thunderstorms). A disaster caused by the activities of humankind (chemical spills, release of radioactive materials, nuclear or conventional war, oppressive governments). The general collapse of society caused by the shortage or unavailability of resources such as electricity, fuel, food, or water. Financial disruption or economic collapse (caused by monetary manipulation, hyperinflation, deflation, or depression). A global pandemic. Widespread chaos or some other unexplained apocalyptic event.

RICKY FLORES PHOTOGRAPHY

RICKY FLORES SELF PORTRAIT
Ricky Flores, the American son of Puerto Rican immigrant parents, was born in New York in 1961. His father, Pastor Flores was a merchant marine and his mother Anna Luisa Flores, a garment worker. Little Ricky spent the first years of his life living in Tremont near Crotona Park, where Expressway # 95 divides the north and south Bronx. He would spend the rest of his childhood in Longwood, the Bronx with his mother. They moved there after the death of his father in 1965.

The small inheritance he received from his father helped him to begin his journey of self discovery and mastery of the art of photography. The money gave him the means to buy a 35mm camera and photo accessories. It was 1980, his senior year in high school, and Ricky had found his passion, documenting life in the South Bronx. He became the boricua "Jimmy Olsen", capturing visions of New York City's Puerto Rican community in the 1980's. Immortalizing the people and environment of the South Boogie in troubled times.

Over the years, Flores has compiled an impressive portfolio. His freelance work has been published in The New York TimesThe Daily News, The City Sun and The Village Voice. He's a double
winner of the New York Press Publishers Association's Award for Spot News. His work during the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center tragedy garnered him a nomination for a Pulitzer Prize. His permanent installation at I.S. 206 in the Tremont section of the Bronx was commissioned by the School Construction Authority, New York City Board of Education and New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Los Seis Del Sur
It seems that Mr. Flores is as passionate as ever. He now resides in Cortlandt Manor, New York, with his wife and two sons, is a photographer for The Journal News and is a member of a group of South Bronx photographers. ‘THE JOURNEY’ A HIGHER GROUND PRODUCTION

189 Yonge Street
Toronto, Ontario
Date: June 14th, 2013

‘The Journey` is a unique, multimedia, live theatre experience framed in the dark history of slavery, but ending in the spirit of freedom. The performance provides a peek into the complex history of people of African descent, in an attempt to separate the fact from the fiction. The production is truly a collaborative effort, inspired by the spirit of cooperation exhibited by the unsung heroes of the Underground Railroad revolution.

The score is a mix of horns, strings, West-African drummers, vocalists, and poets. We combine the musical talents of the string section of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra with the eclectic horns of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble from Chicago. We also feature the talents of local Toronto artists such as Dwayne Morgan and Quisha Wint. Throughout the three-act production, we fully engage the audience with elements of modern dance, poetry, and live music combined with an unforgettable visual presentation.

Tickets available in May

RED STRYPE'S MARC SOLOMON OPENS A NEW SPOT AT 115 ELDRIDGE ST.

LA SENORITA - 115 ELDRIDGE ST.
A transformation has occurred at 115 Eldridge Street, where a little crepe place has been operating the last couple of years. La Crepe C’est Si Bon is now focusing on catering, while the storefront gives way to a new spot from Marc Solomon, who ran the legendary Red Strype Bar in Soho and the original A Train Cafe in Harlem.

We heard from “Chef King Solomon” yesterday, who said “La Senorita” soft launched for friends and family a couple of weeks ago. Per Facebook, Solomon is “back in the neighbourhood where he started, cooking up fresh flavours of Puerto Rican Panqueques, while Señora Claudia serves up café Cubanos to the sights and sounds of yesterday.”

Solomon told us his partners, Claudia Lin and Vincent Bertault will be running the show most of the time because these days he splits his time “shuttling” between New York and Miami. From time to time he pops up at Spur Tree, the Caribbean lounge at 76 Orchard St.

The new Eldridge Street spot is open Wednesday-Sunday 6 p.m.- 2 a.m. — 4 a.m. on weekends.
